Project 2: Perspective
Keeping with a movie theme I decided to do my project on Darren Aronofskys' 2022 film, The Whale. The film has become fairly controversial over Aronofskys' decision to use a fat suit on Brendan Fraser for his character. As a fat person I wanted to see why Aronofsky made this decision and look into his perspective especially since he has doubled down on his stance of the harm or lack thereof the film has caused. I also looked into Brendan Fraser's perspective on the film as he was researching the role and after its release. Because both Arononofsky and Fraser have a positive outlook on the movie I also researched opinions of celebrities who weren't as receptive to the film to get a more well rounded understanding of the controversy. Fat suits have been a common occurrence in media from the past so I researched tropes fat characters commonly fall into. This was mainly to build context around tropes, uses of fat suits and fat characters and the harm they cause. For art I continued to work on building a portfolio and I made a base for a ceramic monster I made over the summer.

For my final product I made a website that walks the viewer through a brief summary of the film and then the controversy. I then have one more page that builds context on fat people in media followed by two pages that dive into the perspectives of Fraser and Aronofsky and celebrity opinions. While the viewer can access all of the pages from a drop down bar I tried to organize it in a way that would lead the viewer through the information in a more linear way. Art
I wanted the monster to look like it was in a cave-like scene with stalagmites surrounding it. I used a large foam block and carved away at it til I was satisfied with the way it looked. The carving took a bit of trial and error and I was learning how to do it as I went. I then primed it and covered it in a material called "Stonewall" to create a more realistic rock effect. The stonewall material dries in a white color so I will be painting it so it's darker browns and more earth-like.
