Project One: Contextualization |
I used contextualization for english by providing information on how disabilities effect disabled actors in Hollywood, what tropes are used to portray disabled people and movies they are used in, why they're harmful, who they affect, how audiences receive these movies and what's being done by the Oscars to promote diversity for future years starting in 2024. For art I created context for where the snake lives/the environment that they're in. When making it I thought about what I'd like to achieve and work on along with how the end product would look. The context behind this piece was to help me improve on my hand-building skills and to help create my portfolio. More details can be found below.
English : Disabilities and Hollywood
For english I researched disabilities and how they're handed in the film world. I looked into new standards for the 2024 Oscars, tropes that are often used for disabled characters and experiences of disabled actors. I wrote an informative essay to present my information in a clear and unbiased way. Now that project one is over looking back I definitely wish I would've worked on the essay more during my free time so I could have gone over it at least once before the final meeting. While writing my essay I sometimes struggled to keep it unbiased. At some points I also felt as though my essay lacked direction making me wish I had refined my topic down a bit more.
Art: Portfolio
I am still a little unsure of what my future will look like after I graduate and while I plan on going to a trade school I still want to build a portfolio in case I go to an art school. I also want to take this time to further explore my interest in sculpting and improve on my skills. For this project I wanted to try building a more organic structure and have a realistic snake weaving through it. I wanted to focus on texture and challenge myself with form and movement for this piece. Throughout the building process I struggled a lot with distributing weight evenly and with how I'd like the piece oriented. I found myself having to make a lot of repairs as the base of the sculpture would crack especially on more load bearing pieces.
When I was in the last stages of creating the sculpture some things went wrong and the base of it fell apart in 6-8 pieces. It was very discouraging especially because I was so close to being done and I had spent so much time on it already. I spent a good bit of time putting it back together and got rid of one of the tubes that was too far gone which is why it looks a little different in the final piece compared to the in progress photos. This sculpture required a lot of patience and was incredibly repetitive. The whole thing is made of coils that had to be hand-rolled and scored and slipped together. I chose to build it in that way because I didn't want to have to cut it open and hollow it out after the structure was made. The scales on the snake also took me a good amount of time because I had to make hundreds of small balls that I'd then "smear" onto the snakes body. I had to restart the scaling process several times because of cracks, mistakes and aesthetics.
